Is insurance a lack of faith?

Dear Friends,

I Timothy 5:8 (NASB ) says, “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

In my opinion, this verse makes a strong case for providing insurance for your family.  In biblical times, when a father passed away, his oldest son took on the breadwinner’s responsibility.  If that father had no son, his brother then undertook the job of taking care of the family, according to the laws that God set up to provide for people in the Israelite nation.  If women and children were truly without someone to provide for them, God’s laws specifically covered the care of widows and orphans in the community in both the Old and New Testaments. (Deuteronomy 14:28 – 19 and James 1:27)

Ideally, the Church today would do an adequate job of caring for people who are left financially destitute due to a catastrophic event.  However, the Church often does not operate in that way, and, as responsible heads of households, we need to provide for the future needs of our families.  As a head of household, I need to do my part in planning for catastrophes that are likely to happen (liability in accidents, death, etc.)  Insurance allows us to provide for the unexpected that may happen.  We recognize God as our Protector, while we wisely undertake the job of providing for our families.

As you provide for your family today, I pray that you experience God’s gracious protection.

Gratefully,

Ron
