Advice about home-based businesses
Dear Friends,
Over the last 25 years or so, the “home based business” segment of the economy has grown tremendously. You can probably think of at least three products or services, off the top of your head, which are available to you through a friend or neighbor who works from home.
The decision to work from home involves answering at least two questions: what is motivating me to work from home, and do I have a solid business that I can do from home?
The first question is a matter of examining your priorities and needs. You may be out of work and need a job; you may be a mom who wants to earn income and have flexibility for your family; you may want to earn income in addition to what you earn through your current employment. Whatever your motivation, be sure to clarify the amount of time that you can put toward working from home as well as the amount of money that you desire to earn. That way, you can weigh all of the home-based alternatives against those two specific guiding criteria (time and money) when you make your decision.
The second question involves deciding which home-based business to pursue. There are “traditional” businesses, where the home-based employee trades time and skill for income on a direct basis. Services such as tax preparation, decorating advice, medical transcription, catering, etc. are good examples. You may have a skill or talent that you can market and that will allow you the flexibility of working from home. If so, you certainly have been given a gift in this challenged economy, and I am grateful on your behalf that the Lord has blessed you with the opportunity to generate income from home.
There are also many network marketing home-based businesses available. As I mentioned in the video, my main caution is to avoid any business that compensates you for “signing up” other distributors. Any legitimate business (traditional or less-traditional) will have a product or service to sell that is marketable and that will sustain the bottom line of the business, long-term. So, if the home-based business that you are investigating pays you (or your distributors) for selling a product, and not for signing up other distributors, then that business has one key component of legitimacy. As I said, though, a good network marketing company will have three things: a strong product, a legitimate compensation system, and a financially sound national or main office.
My wife and daughter both have spent time working from home in a network marketing career, and both have enjoyed the flexibility, relationships, compensation, and experience. Thankfully, we have always been confident in the product, the compensation, and the finances of the company.
May God’s peace encourage you as you pursue financial wisdom and depend on His Truth.
Blessings,
Ron
