Should I start a business?

Rarely has there been a country in history that has as much entrepreneurial opportunity as in America over the last 250 years or so. We live in a land of freedom and in an age of opportunity. Most of us were raised on the “American Dream,” and were taught to take advantage of opportunities that we either create or encounter.
However, in the last few years, as we have experienced a somewhat downward trend in the economy, Americans have generally felt less optimistic about job prospects, the future of their jobs, and even the potential of starting their own businesses.
I’d love to remind you of two things. Whether you feel optimistic about your own version of the “American Dream,” or whether you feel pessimistic about the job market and your prospects of starting a business you hope to create, two things are true.
First of all, as I said in the video, the value of wise thinking is always pertinent. No matter the economic climate, before you start a business, you need to engage in soul searching about the three questions that I mentioned in the video. They are, “Am I passionate about the business I want to start?” “Is there a legitimate market for the product or service I will sell or produce?” and, “Do I have adequate capital or resources?” Taking the time to do solid research, both in the market and in your own head and heart, is wise, no matter the economic climate. If you can answer the three questions in the affirmative, there is a good chance that your business will grow even in challenging economic times.
Secondly, God’s character and calling do not change or shift with shifting economic winds. Jeremiah 29:11 (NAS says, “For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” God’s character is good and true. His love is unconditional. Additionally, He specifically knows and plans each one of our life’s journeys. For that reason, if God is calling you to a specific course of action in your career path, you can trust that He will be faithful to continue to mold and shape you in the best possible way. Circumstances can be frustrating and confusing, but God’s character and calling on your life are not going to change based on changing circumstances. He will be faithful to accomplish all that He has set out to accomplish in your life.
