“Should I Hire A Tax Professional?”

Dear Friends,

Lately, I’m seeing more and more people dressed up like the Statue of Liberty standing on the street corner pointing me toward the tax service offices that are located in the strip malls near my home.  I have to laugh, because their advertising reminds me of a few of the fundamental realities of being a taxpayer.  Their Statue of Liberty costumes remind me that I pay taxes because I am a citizen of one of the greatest countries on earth and that many people would give so much to have that same citizenship.  But, as I watch them on cold days or rainy days or sunny days, I am reminded that taxes are due, no matter what the “weather” – no matter how clear or how complicated they may seem to be.

Many of us use tax professionals to help sort through the complicated tax laws that apply to the specifics of our financial situations.  As I said in the video, my basic bottom line is that, if you feel that your taxes are too complicated for you, it would probably be wise to try to find help with preparing them.  I’ll list below some tax situations that may necessitate you finding a tax professional to assist you:

  • If you have many Schedule A deductions
  • If you own a small business or have a home based business
  • If you are part of a pass through corporation (an S Corp where you receive a K-1 for your taxes)
  • If you might be subject to alternative minimum tax
  • If you have education expenses that might be deductible
  • If you have moved for a job

This is certainly not an exhaustive list, but it might help you to know that your situation is legitimately complicated enough to require some expert help.

May God’s peace encourage you as you pursue financial wisdom and depend on His Truth.

Blessings,

Ron
