Economic Uncertainty: Six Key Principles

Dear Friends,

During the holiday season, I am grateful for simplicity.  Simple interactions with people I care about, simple pleasures like a fire on a cold night, and simple meals like soup remind me to pause and reflect on God’s goodness.  When I study Scripture, I am always grateful for the simplicity of the message God reveals.  His commands are not complicated; His Truth is simple. The six principles that I outlined in the video are from Scripture.  I hope that you take the time to absorb the fact that God’s wisdom is so simple, and yet so powerful.  Just to re-iterate, they are:

  1. Live within your income
  2. Avoid the use of debt
  3. Have liquidity/margin
  4. Set long-term goals
  5. Understand that God owns it all
  6. Practice generosity - it is the key to financial freedom

Most of us probably intend to live out these principles in our financial lives.  Many of us struggle to do so.  Sometimes I find myself frustrated when something that God commands, which seems simple, becomes very complicated in its outworking in my life.

If you are struggling to live out these simple principles because they feel too complicated and burdensome in their execution, consider the following:

I believe that God’s simple wisdom can only be carried out by the power of the Holy Spirit. Surrendering your struggles to God and asking Him for His Holy Spirit to live through you is a simple step that you can take.  As Paul said to Timothy, in II Timothy 1:14, “Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit Who lives in us.” (NIV)  As you seek to live out wise financial principles, ask God for the power of the Holy Spirit Who lives in you.

Also, as you work toward implementing these six principles, remember that change is a process that takes time.  If your major struggle is releasing your grip on your money (i.e., remembering that God owns it all), begin the process by listing all that you own and willingly giving it back to God.  If your major struggle is avoiding debt, make a plan to not add any more debt this holiday season and find a close friend who can help to keep you accountable.  As you identify your major area of struggle or weakness, seek to take small steps in the journey and be willing to undergo a process of change in that area of your life.

May God’s peace encourage you as you pursue financial wisdom and depend on His Truth.

Blessings,

Ron

I liked this lesson. I liked the question Ron said to ask ourselves, "God what would you have me to do?" It's a timeless quesion, but an extra good one for me to ask myself during the Christmas shopping season.
