Economic Uncertainty: How did we get to this point?
Dear Friends,
Thanksgiving is next week. I am blessed to be able to spend the day with family – in a warm home eating a wonderful meal. I will probably relax by the fire and catch a few downs in a football game, too. I pray that you are looking forward to the holiday and that you look forward to celebrating God’s blessings.
Lately, I have been reading through the book of Deuteronomy. Before the Israelites got to the Promised Land, God gave them instructions about how to live once they entered the land. As I was reading, the following verses caught my eye, “It was not your children who saw what He did for you in the desert until you arrived at this place…but it was your own eyes that saw all these great things the Lord has done. Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” (Deut. 11:5, 7-8, NIV)
As a nation and as individuals, we have forgotten the “commands” of the Lord by violating His principles of financial management that I outlined in the video today. When we abandon His principles, we lack the strength to take over the “land” that we are to possess.
What caught my attention about the verses, though, beyond the connection between obeying God and finding strength to fulfill His calling, was the injunction to pay attention to all of the things that God had done for them in their lifetime that they had seen with their own eyes. When we remember God’s hand of grace and mercy and guidance in our own, personal stories, we are far less apt to seek our security and our worth in our financial successes or in the acquisition of things.
This Thanksgiving, as you enjoy time with those you love, also ponder “all these great things the Lord has done” that you have seen with your OWN eyes. As you do, I pray that you will find yourself with a renewed dependence on His principles and a renewed faith in His power in your life.
May God’s peace encourage you as you pursue financial wisdom and depend on His Truth.
Blessings,
Ron
